On Friday all of the students from API that live near my apartment went to cooking classes. This was included in the API study abroad program. We made Potato Souffle with boiled potatoes, grated parmesan cheese, melted butter, eggs, egg yolks, oregano and milk. We also made Fresh Egg Pasta (Pasta Fresca all' Uovo) with eggs and two different types of flour. I had made pasta before at a friends bachelorette party so he quizzed me in front of everyone to ask me what I will need for the process. Then, we made Tomato Sauce with fresh tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, basil leaves, salt and pepper. For the other pasta we made White Meat Ragu (Ragu' Bianco) with ground turkey and ground chicken, veal, olive oil, onion, carrot, celery, brandy, rosemary, thyme, sage, salt and pepper. Finally for dessert (which we actually made first so it could cool) we made Tiramisu' with eggs, sugar, mascarpone cheese, savoyard biscuits, coffee, brandy, and cocoa powder. Then we all sat down to eat! I couldn't believe I made what I was eating... it was amazing.
In the afternoon to walk off our lunch, Emma H. and I walked to the Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square). On our way there we stopped at a quant gelato shop because I had gone six days here in Florence and still never had my first gelato (Italian-style ice cream). The lady was really nice and helped me choose which flavors I would like best. She also told us that we came to the right spot because near the touristy areas there is fake gelato. Apparently the gelato shops where the gelato heaps up over the tin in a stack to look super fluffy is fake. Real gelato is flat and just filled to the brim of the tin it is held in. The fake gelato is "watered down" with extra ice and is not as rich in flavor. I wouldn't have known the difference. Don't get me wrong they are both really good but when in Florence get real gelato at least once. :)
